Grab Bag

At some point this semester, please post a link to an article, video, website, etc. that made you think about something we’ve done in class. Also, please provide a brief discussion about whatever you submitted. This has no due date, but my hope is that you will check it periodically and read what your classmates are posting (feel free to comment, too).

  1. Veronica Shuford - Please take a look at these short videos about action research. After reading Pring Ch. 8, I continued to think about ways in which action research could be better utilized to improve educational practice. These are two examples of how schools are using action research. Given that I have no P-12 experience; I am unaware of the extent that action research is used in schools systems.

  2. Allison: The Brookings Institute, info@brookings.edu article on "Give vouchers time: Low-income families need as many quality school options as possible" discusses the ideology of the school voucher debate and the nuances researchers must study to determine a schools effectiveness.

  3. Allison: Another Brookings Institute article, " No more free lunch for education policy makers and researchers" (info@brookings.edu) discusses policy changes enacted by congress in 2010 expanding Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL). The policy changes allow schools "community eligibility" and waive the application for FRL if 40% of the school qualifies for FRL. Community eligibility means all students' at the school receive a FRL. Because policy makers and researchers use FRL as a construct indicator to track the academic achievement of economically disadvantaged students'over time this indicator is now obscured.
